Saturn's „Eye”

Did you know that Saturn’s north pole looks like a giant eye with a hexagonal pupil?

At the north pole of Saturn there is a massive hexagon-shaped structure about thirty thousand kilometers wide. It is actually a powerful atmospheric vortex made of fast-moving clouds.

In images captured by the Cassini–Huygens spacecraft, the center appears darker, like a “pupil,” surrounded by lighter bluish clouds. From space, it truly resembles a gigantic eye staring into the cosmos.

Scientists believe the hexagonal shape forms due to a stable wave pattern in a rapidly rotating jet stream in Saturn’s atmosphere. While the physical explanation is understood in general terms, researchers are still studying the finer details of this extraordinary phenomenon.
